Play Date

A couple weeks ago our good friends Barbara and Chris brought over their son Ian to play with Hayden and we all hung out and enjoyed the beautiful weather on the back porch.  I got the brilliant idea of entertaining the munchkins with bubbles while Chris (Lair) manned the camera.

All went beautifully...

...for awhile.  Hayden was thoroughly entertained, and Chris got some amazing pictures, but Ian was not so impressed with the bubbles... At least not when Miss Bonnie blew a bunch that the breeze carried right over into his little face.  Let's just say the fun got a bit overwhelming...

...and I've never felt like a bigger heel, making that sweet little boy cry.

But, all was soon forgiven.  We took the crazieness and festivities down a notch and headed inside to dig through Hayden's mountainous tub of toys, which both Ian and Hayden heartily approved of.

Hayden shows off her mad doodling skillz while Ian sports his bag mamma-jamma earthworm scarf (that his mommy made for him, from scratch!)

Pretty good fun for a lazy Monday holiday afternoon.

Passing the time...

On our vacation last week, Carrie convinced me to start a new project with her (ok, I kind of just elbowed in or her project, same diff) instead of going cross-eyed reading old rags, and last night, I FINALLY finished it! Voila! Here is my new boardwalk tote!
Thanks to Carrie, who got me back into the crocheting groove...I spent my whole lunch hour looking up new patterns to start! Now, I just have to find the time to do them!  Ahh, the best-laid plans.  For now, I'm going to enjoy this one shining example of my success (and my HUGE bag... this thing could carry Hayden if it were strong enough. Seriously.  Hard to tell from the picture, but it is ginormous!).

Concours d'Elegance Weekend

This past weekend, Chris, Hayden and I, along with our friends Carrie and Joel, headed South for the 15th annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.  A weekend of fabulous cars, scenery (it's held at the Ritz-Carlton, on their golf course fairways), and food, it has a little something for everyone, and is by far one of our favorite vacations each year.

This year was the first year Carrie and Joel joined us, so we took a couple extra days and made a real weekend trip out of it.  Although it was at times (especially when Hayden was low on sleep and patience) a little cramped with all five of us in the 4-Banger, we really enjoyed the company and the trip.  Joel and Chris took the wheel, entertaining themselves with car talk and bluegrass soundtracks.  Carrie and I manned the baby station in the back, working on our crochet projects, catching up on our magazine reading, entertaining Hayden, and most of all, trying to keep our focus anywhere but on our husbands' driving.  It was a good arrangement, with very few general freak-outs or meltdowns, and most of those are claimed by the munchkin.

Friday night we headed straight for S-town (if not the heart, then definitely the soul of Georgia), aka Savannah.  We made tracks out to Uncle Bubba's, a restaurant with a well-deserved reputation for some of the best eats in town (or in Georgia, for that matter).

Without so much as a sign to signify the final turn, somehow the crowds still manage to find its simple presence (perhaps they follow their noses), and after a decent wait, we finally took our seats and our turns sampling their fare.  The dish of the night was a hard call.  With chargrilled oysters and crab bites to start, the flat-out best darn low country boil I've ever tasted, stuffed shrimp that would make you want to slap your mama, and the freshest boiled shrimp around, it's truly a toss up.   I'll probably have to go back again soon for the tie-breaker.

Saturday we bummed around historic Fernandina Beach, antique shopping, noshing on crab burgers, and hitting the beach for some photo ops and a little shell searching.

Sunday of course was the big event.  The time change made what was already an early wake up call that much more painful, but with Joel's Starbucks in hand, we were on our way to the Island for the Concours.  As with every year, the event did not disappoint.

From new models that blow the term 'sports car' off the flippin' map, like this 1001 hp, 16 cylinder Bugatti,
to true race cars, like those of NASCAR's own #43 - Richard Petty, the show spans the gamut.

One thing all these cars have in common is that they are top of their class, shining examples of the very razor-thin edge of an envelope being pushed to the limits.  There are concept cars from every era, with features and details that are as much art as they are automobile.

There are historic cars; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 1904 Cadillac, Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts, Deusenburgs, Mercedes.

And there are admirers of them all, by the thousands, that join us each year for this amazing event.

The weather was, as it nearly always is, perfect.  A good breeze, lots of sunshine, cool enough for a sweater in the morning, warm enough for sandals by the afternoon.  Always a nice break from the chill of the mountains, and a promise of what is to come.

Hayden loved every minute outside.

Walking around for nearly the first time in her life in the outdoors, she could barely contain her excitement, hopping, squeaking and clapping with every other step.  Running for birds, fish and dogs, playing with the other childen we saw, chasing waves and picking grass, she was in heaven the whole weekend.

After our festivities Sunday, we headed back to downtown Fernandina Beach to the Crab Trap for a sample of the best battered fries I've ever gotten at a restaurant, and some amazing crab legs. Then to the hotel for a hard crash.

Monday, we slowly made our way home (with a short detour back to Uncle Bubba's for some more oysters, boil and a sinful strawberry shortcake), and back to the realities of everyday life.   Of all the many years we've made this trip, I have to say that this was probably my favorite.  To have our friends, great food, cool cars, favorite cities, shopping and antiquing all rolled into one trip ranks this weekend pretty high in my book.  The fact that it was my first vacation from work in over a year didn't hurt its score at all, either.

Amagarumi

For those of you who don't know, Amagarumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures.  In other words, it is using some mad skillz to craft these itsy-witzy fuzzy-wuzzy cutie wittle flufalumps that make you wish you were 3 again and could carry them around in your 'purse' (which is actually a left-over McDonald's Happy Meal box) everywhere you go.

Thankfully for me, I have an uber-talented friend, Carrie, who has the patience and talent to make these crazy-amazing little suckers, and I have a daughter who I can let play with them (until she goes to bed. Then they're mine... all MINE!), so my cover is not blown.  Except for having to explain all the empty Happy Meal boxes in my closet....

Anyway... Long story short, Carrie is how we came to be acquainted with our new little buddy, Sammy the Baby Seal.
Sammy is a sweet little baby seal, complete with festive Winter scarf, who became Hayden's new friend a few weeks ago.    I am equally enamored with his sweet little self, but really, how could you not be?  Just look at this little fella!

He's watching for signs of snow...
That's the one thing this little bugger and I disagree on.  He'd love Winter year round, but I'm ready for SPRING!

Other than that, we get along fine, and Hayden doesn't even hold that against him (although judging from her response to the park this past weekend on the warm Sunday afternoon we were blessed with, it could become a sticking point in their relationship).

Dutch Monkey

Yesterday morning, we woke up (way too early for what was supposed to be a lazy Sunday morning) (and yes, we were being heathens; we should have been headed to church, but instead we were on a mission. A mission to find the most amazing doughnuts in the world. Well, at least within an hour drive. We have our limits on an early Sunday morning. Especially after a way-too-late Saturday night. I'm not naming names, but that sleep loss could have been prevented, boys.) and met our friends Carrie and Joel (did you find the original start of this sentance after all those parenthetical comments? Good for you! You could probably keep up with me through most of my rambling real-time conversations. Otherwise, oh, look! A chicken!) and decided to head to the Cumming-ish area to find a particular doughnut-making legend, the Dutch Monkey. And find it we did.

Oh man, this is the coolest doughnut shop you've ever seen. Started by two amazing chefs, this place is hip, fun, and all about the food! With a huge glass display case that displays their fine wares, you can drool over their exotic creations such as "pineapple coconut lime cake", or "lemon meringue" (complete with toasted meringue atop the generous portion). There is a Boston Cream donut, a blueberry with cream cheese frosting (yum!), French Crullers that will make you cry "uncle" (which they didn't have yesterday morning. Boo.), Pomogranate Iced, and even a Maple Butter Bacon, fried with a delicious strip of bacon around it. Oh, and of course, their signature doughnut was the "Dutch Monkey" a banana-jam filled doughnut drizzled with chocolate icing.

We went, we saw, we stuffed ourselves silly. They should have big canteens of milk at each table to help you wash down all the gooey, wonderful sweetness. Hayden loved the bright colors of the place, the kiddie table, especially, watching them make the doughnuts through the Willy-Wonka-ish viewing ports along the kitchn, and most of all, enjoyed her first tastes of a real doughnut!

When we were thoroughly sated, we sat and talked and enjoyed each other's company as we plotted our next visit and choices for the next time. Maybe once a quarter would be enough to visit, we thougth. Otherwise, this place could do some serious damage to our waistlines. Well, maybe once a month, if we promised to be good, and only get one. (We each had to try two this time, just to check out as many flavors as possible). We let Hayden explore the kiddie area a bit, and she even met some of the other kids, including another Hayden, who was about 8 years old and was just thrilled to meet another girl named Hayden (they're apparently somewhat of a rare breed, we're finding).

What a great way to spend a lazy morning. Out with some of our best friends, eating doughnuts that rightly should be described as 'decadent pastries', and playing and laughing with Hayden. Of course, my absolute favorite part of the morning was getting to watch Joel's expressions at he ate. That man knows how to appreciate a good meal!
If you're ever in Cumming, may I highly recommend a stop in to the soon-t0-be-famous Dutch Monkey (and, in full disclosure, no this isn't a paid endorsement. I'm pretty sure these folks don't even know I exist. I just love a good doughnut!)

Merry Christmas, One and All

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. We certainly did - lots of family time, food and fun. After hosting 3 holiday meals, me and my house are in some serious need of recovery! It was well worth it, though. Got to see lots of family, play with Hayden, eat some delicious holiday treats - like Toffee Brittle, Sweet Potato Crunch, Honeybaked Ham, and Fried Ravioli (my new favorite!), and sleep in a day or two.

Hayden gave me the best gift of all - she slept 11 hours straight the night before Christmas Eve, which was a record for her, and following our unsuccessful milk-tolerance test last week, the longest she'd slept for awhile!

We gave her a baby baby grand piano, which I have to say I think she loves more than any of her other gifts (paper, boxes and ribbons aside). She continually goes over to it and bangs out a tune, then swings around to ensure we're watching, and coaches us on how to clap for her. What a ham! Not to be upstaged, if her daddy sits down at his piano to play, she toddles right over and begins playing hers as well. I have some videos that I'll get posted soon, that I'm sure will crack you up.

As for her other gifts, don't worry - they're getting lots of use, too. Her Daddy, Poppie, and others are keeping themselves entertained with those. It's hysterical to see grown men rolling on the floor playing with little girl's toys. Nothing like it, I tell ya.

We even managed to squeeze in a few rounds of Yahtzee with the Massey clan on Christmas day. As always, it proved to be a competitive, raucous time, with customized fist pumps for each unique score, and plenty of cheers, cheats and cat-calls across the table. I love playing games with the family, and can't wait until Hayden is old enough to join the fray.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are ready for the new year! Best wishes, one and all!

For those of you who pray

I would ask that you please pray for Stellan. He just turned 1 year old last week, and is fighting for his life this very minute in a hospital in Boston. He is battling some heart defects he's had from birth, and they are rushing to perform a hopefully life-saving procedure on him right now. His mother is there with him alone right now, as his father is flying in to be with them.

Their faith in God's will and grace in their lives is amazing and uplifting, even during these trials. I pray that their faith is rewarded. Please, if you pray, pray for this little one and his family.

You can read updates about him here as his mother is able to post them - www.mckmama.com, and her tweets here - http://twitter.com/mckmama

No news is Good News

As I was getting ready for work this morning, I scrolled through the morning's top stories online just long enough to be sickened to my stomach. Another shooting rampage, this one on a military base, targeting those who volunteer to protect us. Another parent shot by their child in anger (shudder). Another execution on the horizon. More car wrecks, illnesses, dangers. I read long enough to remember why I don't read the news. It's hard to balance staying current with world issues to be informed, but avoiding enough of the horrid abominations humans inflict upon one another to keep you from sinking into an quagmire of depression.

What a sick, sad state things are in.

Whenever I feel this way, I think of my family. My wonderful friends. And most of all, my little church, and the God I know abides with each of us. I know that he can raise us up, keep us safe, and offer us a promise of a new day beyond this existance. One free from pain and heartache, devoid of shootings and wars. I lean on him, and amidst this turmoil, he renews my faith and hope.

Speaking of renewal, faith and hope, I did in fact get some WONDERFUL news this morning. My friends Jodi and Marius welcomed their sweet new baby girl into the world this weekend! Little Emi Addison joined us on October 31, 2009!
Me, Jodi and Hayden this summer.
They are missionaries living in Swaziland, and they had her in South Africa. Please keep your thoughts and prayers with them as they adjust to this new time in their lives, and pray that Jodi's parents arrive safely for their first visit with their new granddaughter.
I can't wait to meet little Emi! She's just such a doll baby, and has nearly as much hair as Hayden did when she was born. I'll share pics soon!
Have a happy Friday and a great weekend, all!
